  3. Explanation of the FCC Exam Pools Format

  6.      The current Exam Pools have been updated and reflect the
  7. new Novice Enhancement Exam Pool format as of the date the 
  8. Pool was uploaded.  This Exam Pool contains the answer sets
  9. as used by the ARRL/VEC examination teams.

  11.      So that all users of the FCC Exam Question Pools may 
  12. understand the format, I submit this for your consideration.

  14.     Before I begin, lets look at an example :

  24.  A. Audio frequencies are those below 20,000 Hz.,
  25.     and Radio frequencies are those above 20,000 Hz.
  26.  B. Audio frequencies are those below 50,000 Hz.,
  27.     and Radio frequencies are those above 50,000 Hz.
  28.  C. Audio frequencies are those below 10,000 Hz.,
  29.     and Radio frequencies are those above 10,000 Hz.
  30.  D. Audio frequencies are those above 20,000 Hz.,
  31.     and Radio frequencies are those below 20,000 Hz.

  38.  B. A Microwave Frequency.
  39.  C. An Intermediate Frequency.

  45.     Lets take it a line at a time.
  46.  
  47.     The first line contains the official question number and the
  48. the correct answer.  It is fully left justified, uppercase only,
  49. with three (3) spaces between the question number and the answer.
  50. The line terminator is immediately after the answer, no hidden
  51. spaces.   Most users will want to change the number to a 
  52. sequential series (1,2,3,Etc.).  And all will certainly not want
  53. the answer attached to the question.  But have an answer key
  54. generated on a seperate sheet.

  56.     The next group of lines are the Official Question.  They are
  57. fully left justified and like all line in the question pool they
  58. are 64 characters or less in length.  This will allow the user
  59. to fit two questions across an 8.5 inch page if compressed
  60. printing is used.  This will allow 10 to 12 questions to fit
  61. on a typical printed page.

  63.      One blank Line seperates the question from the answers.
  64.  
  65.     After the required blank line, we have the answer group.
  66. It is indented one space so that a nice looking answer group
  67. may be printed with a minimum of fuss.  The answers begin
  68. A. B. Etc., followed by a space, followed by the answer, again
  69. 64 characters or less in total length.  If an answer requires
  70. more than one line, successive lines will be indented four
  71. spaces to align them with the body of the question above.
  72. Keeping good appearance in mind, if one answer has more than
  73. one line, all answers to the same question will have the
  74. same number of lines.  This rule obviously could not be used as
  75. law in many cases.  Each answer ends with a period.  It just
  76. looks nice.

  78.      Finally, two spaces between question groups.  This will 
  79. allow the user to detect the end of a question block, as a
  80. question block may vary from seven to nearly twenty lines,
  81. two blank lines will apear only between questions blocks.

  84.     Exam pools are stored in subelement groups. (2A,3AB,3BC,Etc.)
  85. Files are named as POOL2A.TXT, POOL3AC.TXT, Etc.   This is to
  86. keep the file sizes to a reasonable length and make maintanance
  87. a bit more managable.
